Voices of Prince George’s County in partnership with The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland School of Music & the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
Sound Impact is proud to serve as Artistic Director of Voices of Prince George’s County (VoPGC), an initiative of The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Since 2023, VoPGC has brought new culturally relevant programs to families and teens through ongoing community partnerships. UMD students from the school of music, medicine, and public policy collaborate with Sound Impact during program design, songwriting, and workshops as they learn tools for community-centered programming. During the 2025 - 26 season, we look forward to expanding our programs to serve young people within The Foundations School and the North Brentwood Community Center.
Latin American Youth Center
The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) empowers low-income youth to navigate the challenges of adolescence and build strong foundations for adulthood.
Use Your Voice Workshops
In close partnership with LAYC and The Clarice Performing Arts Center, Sound Impact brings musical storytelling to teens in LAYC’s NextGen after-school programs.
Our workshops provide youth with the tools to express their stories through creative writing, instrumental exploration, movement, and collaborative performances. These sessions help students build confidence, discover their creativity, and strengthen their voice in a supportive environment.
Solutions in Hometown Connections
Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC) supports refugees and newcomers—primarily women and children—to overcome the challenges of resettlement.
Welcome Workshops
Sound Impact and UMD music students integrated music into SHC Welcome Workshops, teaching simple songs to help Afghan women improve their English. The program aimed to help participants overcome language barriers, better navigate everyday experiences, and enhance their job prospects.
Time Travel Through Music
Sound Impact and School of Music student musicians take 35 women and children on a Time Travel Adventure, teaching music fundamentals through performance and interactive movements, integrating Afghan and global children’s songs. These workshops foster community, connection, and joy among refugees at risk of isolation and depression after arriving in the U.S., supported by SHC.
The 2024 workshop culminated in a musical exchange with musicians from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The women and children shared their “Peace Song” – song lyrics they had written about peace, which Sound Impact set to music. Musicians from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra joined the participants in playing Afghan folk songs.
