Avril Graffe Droboniku is a rising senior at School Without Walls in Washington, D.C., where she excels academically as a bilingual student in Spanish and English, holds intermediate proficiency in Chinese, is a National Honor Society member, an AP Scholar, and a Varsity Lacrosse captain. Avril is a passionate musician, social entrepreneur, and community advocate dedicated to expanding equitable access to music education.
As principal cellist of the DC Youth Orchestra Program, one of the nation's leading youth orchestras, Avril has performed at the Kennedy Center, the National Gallery of Art, and alongside the U.S. Army Band and Grammy-winning artists. She is also a Washington Musical Pathways Initiative artist and studies under Danielle Cho, Assistant Principal Cellist of the Washington National Opera.
Beyond performance, Avril co-founded Play for Music Education, an initiative that educates families on the science-backed benefits of music, inspires students through interactive community performances, and connects families to equitable music programs. She has advocated on Capitol Hill in support of the GAAME Act, a legislation that supports music education in schools, and serves as an elected student representative on DCYOP's Board of Directors.
Through internships at Sound Impact and DCYOP's Passport to Summer, Avril has gained hands-on experience in youth program development, social media, and community outreach. Avril is returning for her second year as a Sound Impact intern.
